Abstract
The use of the reflection of folk culture in local tales is among the major themes in contemporary fiction. Since human life and thought cannot be separated from literature, folk culture and its exhibition are only a natural extension in terms of storytelling. The current study attempts to examine and explore the themes of folk culture in Mazandaran tales, especially Gav-Gom. Methodologically, this study is descriptive–analytical and takes a qualitative approach due to the nature of the data. Through close reading and analysis of Ali Alizadeh's novel Gav-Gom, the study finds that the novelist strives to propose a new reading of fiction with local culture. He makes an effort to incorporate novel cultural and environmental elements with narrative and linguistic tactics appealing at once to Mazandaran outsiders by taking them to a new story setting.
