Abstract
The study of names and address terms in different cultures and languages can reflect the linguistic, cultural, and social values of each region and therefore attracts the attention of linguists, anthropologists, and sociologists. Previous studies on names and address terms have mostly been conducted in formal languages, and dialect studies have almost been neglected. Jahrom is one of the ancient cities of Iran in Fars Province, and its linguistic variety belongs to the Southwestern Iranian languages. This study, with descriptive-analytical methodology, aims at analyzing the names and various address terms in Jahromi dialect by the framework of dialectology of names and address terms. The lexical data of this research was also collected from native speakers mostly by field study, these data transcribed, then categorized and analyzed. According to the results of this research, shortening in various ways is a frequent process in Jahromi names, vowel addition is used frequently in this variety, and there are different names for people of different ages and social status. The prefix /ā/ is a shortened form of /āğā/ and the suffix /jā/ and /ju/is a shortened and mutational form of "jān" and is frequently used in Jahromi addresses. Kinship address terms in this dialect can also be classified into four categories: consanguinity, causal, fictitious, and age-related. In terms of syntactic structure, group names are formed as titles related to professions using genitive and possessive compounds, and for expressing affiliation, they utilize Bunuvat (referring to maternal, paternal, or ancestral descent) or are based on behavioral and personality traits via adjectival compounds.
