Content Analysis of Kurmanji Lullabies: A Case Study of 40 Lullabies

Abstract
Lullabies, as a part of folklore literature, contain narratives as well as religious, social, and cultural implications. Hence, the present study seeks to retrieve the social, historical, and cultural themes reflected in Kurmanji lullabies. The aim of this paper is to introduce and provide a content analysis of 40 Kurmanji lullabies. Considering the fact that no systematic attempt has previously been made to collect Kurmanji lullabies, the authors of this research first gathered lullabies through fieldwork in Kurmanji-speaking villages of Shirvan County –including Oghaz, Bavanlu, Topkanlu, Tokor, Gadoganlu, Namanlu, and others– and then analyzed the data in light of the study’s objectives. The analysis of the collected Kurmanji lullabies revealed five main thematic elements: (1) historical, (2) environmental, (3) familial, (4) romantic, and (5) moment-centered. It should be noted that these elements are not necessarily child-oriented.
