In the folk culture of southern Fars and Hormozgan, there is a belief in a creature called dada melakū or dādā melāke that lives in water reservoirs and frightens children to keep them away from the water. The meaning of this name is now lost to local speakers. This research employs a combined approach (library-based, fieldwork, and comparative-historical analysis) to investigate the linguistic roots and mythological identity of this being. Linguistically, two possible origins emerge: the Middle Persian malkūs, a destructive demon in Iranian mythology, which, through the dropping of the final "s," yields melakū; and the Arabic malak (angel), which, combined with local definite markers (*-ū* or long *-i*), results in melakū or melāke. Mythologically, two main candidates were examined: Malkūs and Anāhitā. In mythological assessment, Anāhitā is preferred over Malkūs: she is the goddess of water, purity, and war, with a history of worship in the Fars region; her function is to protect water from pollution; and her radiant description matches the shimmering reflection of light on the walls of water reservoirs. In contrast, Malkūs is a demon of cold and winter, unrelated to water. The fear instilled by dada melakū is not hostility but a form of protective deterrence to safeguard the vital water source in the arid climate of southern Iran, which can be explained by "cultural survival." This study draws on linguistic evidence, ancient texts, and ecological analysis to link "Dada Melakū" to Anāhitā, showing the persistence and transformation of myths over time.
