Abstract

One of the important techniques of Eastern narrative construction is the nested or arabesque mode, in which the narrative expands through the appearance of new characters (son, grandson, ayyārs, helpers) and may be termed spiral (spring-like) narration. This technique began with the narratives of Abū Ṭāher Ṭarṭūsī (6th century AH) and reached its peak in the Safavid period. Almost all known narratives of the Safavid era are continuations of earlier narratives and follow this pattern. The popular romance "Bahman-Shāhnāmeh" by Bīghamī is a sequel to the same author’s "Fīrūzshāh-nāmeh", composed after the creation of the two-volume "Dārāb-nāmeh". In the present study, an attempt is made, through a descriptive-analytical documentary method, to examine the process of spiral narration in order to investigate the motivational dimensions of the author/producer and the general urban audience in the Safavid era. The findings show that the narrative structure of the popular romance "Bahman-Shāhnāmeh"—as volumes four and five of "Dārāb-nāmeh" and a sequel to "Fīrūzshāh-nāmeh"—is based on a non-linear pattern in which the fundamental narrative functions, corresponding to Propp’s model, are repeated in successive cycles. Each cycle, by changing the characters, advances the plot in a spiral manner, resulting in temporary endings and the beginning of new narratives. The audience’s taste and demand, as well as the author/producer’s outlook and skill in spiral narration, played a fundamental role in popularizing the narrative for the Safavid audience.

Keywords: popular narrative literature, popular romance, spiral narration, Bahman-Shāhnāmeh, Moḥammad Bīghamī, Safavid era
 <OtherAbstract Language="FA">
